Site Narrative:
The Chemical Commodities Shawnee site was used as a warehouse storage facility for various chemicals by the Chemical Commodities, Inc. (CCI) starting in1977. An investigation of all the Kansas CCI facilities was sparked in 1988 after a CCI truck hauling ammonium perchlorate was involved in a fire and safety incident in residential Kansas City, KS.
An in-depth inventory of the warehouse and soil/sediment sampling were conducted in December 1988 at the request of the EPA.
During a 1991 inspection, it was noted that chemicals were improperly stored and the site was not secured, posing a threat to public health. A removal action occurred in October 1992 and 223 containers were removed. No post removal sampling of soils or groundwater can be found in KDHE/BER files. A 2019-2021 Source Investigation identified chromium, arsenic, chlorinated solvents, and petroleum contaminants above their Risk-Based Standards for Kansas (RSK) levels in soil and chlorinated solvents and petroleum contaminants above RSK in groundwater.
A permanent monitoring well network was installed and the site entered the Long-Term Monitoring (LTM) program. KDHE conducted the first LTM sampling event in Fall 2022. |
