Site Narrative:
Depleted uranium-238 stored in drums filled with packing liquid were sold to CCI in 1964 by a Department of Defense agency. The drums remained in a building at 9900 Lexington Boulevard more than 25 years.
In March 1990 the Johnson County Department of Public Works inspected building structural integrity and recommended removing drums due to floor structural integrity. In the same year, EPA completed drum, soil, and building floor sampling to determine site contamination extent. Total site radiation levels were estimated at 3.4 picocuries. Analysis of the soil collected beneath the building in May 1990 detected beryllium and arsenic exceeding Kansas Risk-based Standards.
In February 1993 Army Armament, Munitions and Chemical Command disposed of the depleted uranium at an EPA-approved landfill in South Carolina. The building was dismantled and removed including excavating and disposing surrounding site contaminated soil at the same landfill.
In August 1993 KDHE analyzed on-site soil radiation levels and concluded no sample exceeded the Kansas Mandatory removal criterion of 8 picocuries per gram. In August 1995 the contractor finished post-removal surface soil sampling for beryllium and arsenic. Metals concentrations results were at or less than background levels.
KDHE completed site indoor air radon sampling in 2009. Results indicate radon concentrations are within regulatory standards. After hazardous waste removal and post-removal confirmation sampling the site no longer presents a threat to human health or the environment. EPA concludes no further site action is appropriate or necessary, thus a threat to human health and the environment no longer exists. This site requires no further action and KDHE classifies it resolved. |
