Site Narrative:
The site was accepted into Dry Cleaning Trust Fund and prioritized for fund expenditures in 2011. On January 24, 2017, KDHE and EMR conducted a site visit. Soil gas modules were installed the next day to assess potential areas of soil contamination inside and outside the building.
Data from the soil gas modules was used in conjunction with other information to determine the best locations for soil and groundwater probes. Initial delineation work was completed the week of April 17, 2017. Additional delineation work will be completed the week of July 25, 2017. Two private wells were sampled along Seneca street with one result indicating contamination above the EPA MCL for cis 1,2-DCE. After these wells were sampled, an additional 192 wells were sampled to determine the extent of the contamination. With this information, KDHE developed a memorandum of agreement with the City of Haysville to connect 227 properties in the area of identified contamination. Water mains needed for private connections have been installed and the connections are being made. 210 properties have accepted the offer to be connected to the water system.
With the extent known, 30 monitoring wells were placed around and inside the contaminant plume to monitor for any change to the plume dynamics. Groundwater sampling was taking place on a quarterly basis.
An Air Sparge/Soil Vapor Extraction pilot test was conducted in 2018 on the site soils to determine the viability of the technology; however, results indicated the site soils were not ideal for the technology.
The former building was taken down and removed in September of 2019. The contaminated soils at the site were excavated and disposed of in June 2020. An infiltration gallery was installed to allow potential use of a chemical oxidant in the future to remediate remaining contamination at the source area of the site. Clean fill was brought in to backfill the excavation area.
In 2021, twelve additional monitoring wells were installed in the area immediately downgradient of the site to delineate and monitor the VOC contamination migrating offsite.
A Technology Evaluation of the purposed ISCO remedy and installed delivery gallery was conducted in 2022; however, the remedy was determined not to be practical. If groundwater contamination levels do not sufficiently decrease, over time, after source removal via excavation, KDHE intends to evaluate additional, remedial actions. |
