Site Narrative:
A property assessment in 1990 identified the presence of elevated levels of TPH in the soil. Subsequent Investigations in 1993 and 1997 identified and confirmed the presence of TCE, chloroform, methylene chloride, 1 2-DCE, xylene, and various PAHs in the soil, and TCE, PCE, 1 2 DCE, and Vinyl chloride in the ground water. The City of Wichita completed a source control investigation and source control measures study in April 1998. The CAD was finalized in June 1998. The Remedy selected was excavation of soils impacted above IRGs and ground water monitoring. The excavation was completed and approved in August 1998. Installation of monitoring wells was delayed due to construction of the bus maintenance facility.
Subsequent to the remedial excavation, the City named Glickman Inc. in a lawsuit (Aero et al.) as the responsible party for the chlorinated solvent contamination, based on Glickman's operation of a metal recycling operation at the location. The operation reportedly accepted 55-gallon drums containing remnants of chemicals. The lawsuit was settled between Glickman Inc. and the City in December 2001. A Bus Barn Maintenance Facility was constructed over the source area.
The Bus Barn source area monitoring network of three wells is being sampled semi-annually as part of the Gilbert and Mosley monitoring requirements. Recent results from semi-annual monitoring of wells in the Gilbert and Mosley network near the Site show contaminant concentrations below the KDHE Tier 2 Levels for groundwater. Two wells were damaged and were replaced in 2016. Long-term monitoring continues in this area. |
