Site Narrative:
The Apex Engineering property was identified as a possible source area during investigation of the NIC Site (Site ID C2-087-71050). Previous occupants of the property include H and H Parts and its purchaser, Chromalloy. The City of Wichita issued a Certificate and Release to Apex Engineering in 2003.

In October 2008, KDHE requested that the City of Wichita conduct a Comprehensive Investigation (CI) and prepare a Corrective Action Study (CAS) for the Apex Site. KDHE approved the City of Wichita's CI/CAS Work Plan in June 2009, and the initial phase of the investigation was conducted in September 2009. The second phase of the CI was conducted in late February 2010. Concurrent with development of the City’s CI/CAS Work Plan, KDHE conducted a Unified Focused Assessment (UFA) at the property as part of a process that identified potential radium dial facilities. The UFA included soil and groundwater sampling and did not identify elevated radionuclide levels in the Site vicinity. KDHE approved the CI Report in September 2010. Based on the location of the Apex Engineering Site with respect to nearby residential properties, KDHE requested that the City of Wichita assess vapor intrusion from groundwater to indoor air. A work plan for vapor intrusion assessment activities was approved in June 2010. The initial phase of the vapor intrusion assessment was completed in July 2010. Subsequent indoor air testing took place in December 2010 and January 2011. Site COCs were not detected in indoor air at concentrations in excess of KDHE's Tier 2 Levels.

In fall of 2017, half of the building structure was demolished and additional investigation was conducted. In summer of 2019, the City of Wichita implemented an Air Sparging/Soil Vapor Extraction (AS/SVE) pilot test. A startup report was approved by KDHE. Groundwater monitoring was conducted quarterly for the following two years, and results showed effectiveness. The AS/SVE Pilot Study Report dated January 17. 2022, documents the evaluation of the results. KDHE approved the Corrective Action Study on October 6, 2022, City of Wichita has proposed Soil Excavation as an Interim Remedial Measure.
