Site Narrative:
The Coleman Northeast Site is located within the North Industrial Corridor Site in Wichita, Kansas. In 1990, The Coleman Company (Coleman) conducted a Preliminary Study to assess potential soil and groundwater contamination and conducted a Phase I subsurface investigation in 1991. The results of these studies indicated that soil and groundwater were impacted by chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Coleman consequently entered into a Consent Order with KDHE in November 1992 to conduct a site investigation and evaluation of remedial alternatives. Investigations were conducted from 1990 through 1997 and identified elevated concentrations of VOCs emanating from two source areas.

A groundwater extraction system was installed as an interim measure in 1995. The system was installed for hydraulic containment and remediation of impacted groundwater and consists of three groundwater recovery wells located in the southwest part of the facility. A proposal for upgrading the existing groundwater remediation system was approved by KDHE BER in November 2014, and system upgrades were completed in 2015.

A pilot test for soil shredding/remediation was conducted in early 2002. In 2003, the soil source area located southeast of the plant building was remediated using the soil shredding technique. Approximately 5,725 cubic yards of impacted soils were excavated, treated on-site, and used to backfill the excavation. Soil was excavated to a depth of 15-16 feet. Since this time, Coleman has initiated several pilot tests to evaluate treatment technologies for soil and groundwater contamination in the source areas.

Semiannual groundwater and remedial system performance monitoring is ongoing. An enhanced reductive dechlorination (ERD) pilot test was completed in May 2014, and an ERD summary report was approved by KDHE. A Corrective Action Study was approved in August 2016.

KDHE developed the Final Corrective Action Decision, which was available for public comment August 22 thru Sept. 21, 2018, and signed by the KDHE Secretary on October 8, 2018. A new Consent Order was negotiated and the Corrective Action Plan, approved in April 2020, has been implemented. Groundwater monitoring is conducted semi-annually.
