Site Narrative:
The AID facility has also been operated under the names R.C. Allen and Great Plains Instruments. The KDHE Bureau of Air and Radiation (BAR) has been involved with decontamination of a well on site and removal of drums containing radioactive materials in 1980-81. In 1989 elevated levels of trichloroethylene (TCE) were identified in a well on site. KDHE performed a Field Assessment in March 1994, which identified a potential 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA) source at the facility. A follow up investigation of the apparent 111 TCA source in October 1996 indicated that the 1,1,1-TCA was no longer above the maximum contaminant level (MCL); however, the degradation product 1,1-dichloroethylene (1,1-DCE) had migrated off the site property to the southeast and its concentration (38 µg/L) remained above the MCL.
This site is part of the larger Gilbert and Mosley Site. The R.C. Allen/AID/Great Plains facility was named in the lawsuit filed by the City of Wichita for contaminant contribution to the Gilbert and Mosley site. AID settled with the City. The City has since determined that AID is not an "active" source area. Therefore, the site will be addressed by the Gilbert and Mosley containment/treatment system. Ground water at the facility continues to be monitored in the Gilbert & Mosley semi-annual sampling events. No changes have occurred at this area. The Gilbert and Mosley remediation system, with remedial wells in the A plume area, are addressing an contaminant contribution from the site. Plume A remedial wells A1, A2, and A3 were discontinued in 2011. Monitoring wells located in the A plume area continue to indicate non-detections for all contaminants of concern at the site. |
