Non-Infectious Disease Cluster Investigation (NIDCI)

All infectious disease surveillance and outbreak investigations are conducted by the Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Response program within KDHE. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment responds to all reports of suspected disease clusters. Disease clusters that are not associated with an infectious agent are investigated by environmental health professionals within the Environmental Public Health Tracking program. Investigation of non-infectious disease clusters are a critical public health function and every report is investigated to the extent possible.

disease cluster is the occurrence of a greater than expected number of cases of a particular disease or health outcome within a group of people in a geographic area over a defined period of time. Some examples of disease cluster investigations may include cancer and birth defects.
