Site Narrative:
The Bremen Commodity Credit Corporation/United States Department of Agriculture (CCC/USDA) site is located in Marshall County, Kansas. The site consisted of 48 grain bins and was operated from 1951 to 1970. The bins no longer exist at the site.
The site was identified through the Commodity Credit Corporation of the United States Department of Agriculture (CCC/USDA) Private Well Sampling program conducted by KDHE when carbon tetrachloride was detected in a sample collected from a private well. In July 1998, KDHE conducted a Site Reconnaissance and Evaluation (SRE), which included re-sampling of the initial water well in addition to two other wells. Results indicated that two wells contained carbon tetrachloride. In August 1998, KDHE collected soil and groundwater samples to determine the source of carbon tetrachloride detected in the wells. The results of the sampling suggest that the former CCC/USDA site is a source of carbon tetrachloride contamination.
KDHE attempted to sample a private well in Bremen in 2006; however, the selected well had been removed from service. In January 2012 KDHE requested CCC/USDA develop a sampling plan to resample private wells near former CCC/USDA grain bin Sites in Kansas where no monitoring program currently exists. CCC/USDA requested that KDHE perform the sampling, and KDHE prepared/approved a Private Well Sampling Plan in December 2012 for the Site. KDHE mobilized to Bremen in February 2013 to conduct the CCC/USDA-sponsored Private Well Sampling; however, no samples were able to be collected. |
