Site Narrative:
The volatile organic compounds (VOC) analysis indicated trace amounts of tetrachloroethylene in samples GW-2, GW-3, and GW-4. The maximum detection was 1.2 µg/L in GW-4. This sample was located in a suspected upgradient direction. It does not appear that the PCE detections are attributable to releases from the Air Capital Dial. The PCE site will be identified as the West 2nd and Vine Street site for a future Site Reconnaissance and Evaluation (SRE) investigation. Metals were not significantly detected above background.

Radium-226 was detected in ground water at a maximum of 0.1 pCi/L in both GW-1 (background) and GW-3 (on-site). Since the background detection was 0.1 pCi/L, and the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) is 5 pCi/L above background, a significant release of radium-226 to ground water above background does not appear to be present at the site.

Elevated gamma radiation was detected in Soil #3 with a maximum screening level of 74 µR/hr. Soil #3 indicated radium (Ra-226) at 2.8 pCi/g by laboratory analysis. While the screening sample was elevated above background (8 µR/hr), this is below the EPA screening criteria of 5 pCi/g.

A significant release of VOCs and metals is not present in shallow ground water at the Air Capital Dial site. Radium-226 was detected below current screening levels, and it appears from the SRE data that an extensive area of exterior radiation is not present at the site. KDHE/BAR may conduct or direct the licensee to conduct a more detailed scoping survey to determine if any other contaminated areas are present within the interior of the building. Additional compliance issues for the interior of the facility will be conducted under KDHE/BAR lead regarding the Radioactive Materials License.
