Site Narrative:
Property owner applied and was accepted into the Dry Cleaning Trust Fund in 1999.
This Best Cleaners site was initially worked under the regional Gilbert-Mosley project managed by the City of Wichita (Plume E). The general assessment was completed by the City of Wichita. KDHE, Best Cleaners, and City of Wichita reached a settlement agreement for past costs, future regional remediation costs, and future corrective action responsibilities. The agreement essentially transferred the site source area remediation responsibilities to the Kansas Drycleaning Program. The Kansas Drycleaning Program completed the source investigation and is addressing remedial efforts in the source area. As part of the settlement agreement, the City of Wichita retains the responsibility for downgradient remediation efforts.
Following this agreement, The City of Wichita started up the regional groundwater remediation system at the site in 2002.. The groundwater treatment system was designed to remediate large volumes of groundwater that had been contaminated by various chlorinated solvents (PCE, TCE, DCE, and VC), and the remediation system included the operation of 13 extraction wells, 5.5 miles of piping, and a hydraulic-venturi air stripper treatment system.
An adjacent Storage Tank Trust Fund site had completed a detailed soil vapor extraction (SVE) and air sparge (AS) pilot study so KDHE utilized the data to determine AS/SVE is a viable technology.
An SVE/AS remediation system wells and piping was later installed at the source area where the private sewer connects to the public sewer in the alley that is west of the former dry cleaning facility. Remediation lines were installed below grade and connected to each remediation well. The decision was made to shut down SVE/AS remedial system in 2008 for a long-term rebound study and the site was moved into long term monitoring. The levels of the contaminants of concern remained low. KDHE completed a 3-month rebound study in 2011. Removal was minimal and the remediation system has been shut down. Groundwater monitoring indicated elevated concentrations of cis-1,2-DCE but below the RSK. KDHE has continued LTM at the site.
The most recent action is the Spring 2020 LTM sampling event. Results show below RSK detections for PCE, TCE, and Cis-1,2-DCE.
Fall 2021 LTM event is being planned. |
