Site Narrative:
The Nike Battery Headquarters (KC-65) was identified as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) Program. The discovery date is the date that the KDHE information requests for the site were submitted. KDHE performed research activities at NARA in College Park Maryland and discovered plan drawings for the site.
The site was the headquarters for the Nike battalion in the Kansas City Defense Area that consisted of four missile sites, two in Kansas and two in Missouri. KDHE completed an Initial Site Screening report in February 2002 that identified the need for subsurface investigation. A radar facility, potential USTs, and a septic system were identified as potential areas of concern.
The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) conducted a property ownership review and concluded that a potion of the site was owned by Johnson County and a portion was still in US Government Ownership. The maintenance and housing areas in US Government ownership do not qualify for the FUDS program. However, the portions owned by Johnson County do qualify for FUDS. Therefore, the site has been incorporated into the Olathe Naval Air Station FUDS project for further assessment. KDHE/BER is currently working with the USACE to identify areas in need of further assessment.
Not in current DSMOA contract 2022-2024. |
