Site Narrative:
Between 1943 and 1944 the Army Air Force acquired 637.03 acres fee and 322 acres in aviation agreements. The site was known as the Cherryvale Auxiliary Field No. 9 and was used as an auxiliary field for the Independence Army Air Field (Basic Flying School), Kansas. The site remained under Department of Defense (DOD) control during the period of ownership. The site was reported surplus in 1945 and was conveyed to the City of Parsons, Kansas by quitclaim deed in December 1947. The site is currently used as a municipal airport by the City of Parsons. Aliases: Tri-City Airport; Parsons City Airport; Cherryvale (ex) Auxiliary Field No. 9; and Cherryvale Aux. Field 9.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers investigated the site on May 24, 1996. A groundwater sample was collected and analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by EPA Method 624. A soil sample was collected from the Crash Truck Station and was analyzed for metals by EPA Method 200.7. KDHE collected split samples from these locations. EPA completed a Pre-CERCLIS Screening on May 2, 2001, and archived the site on June 7, 2001.

Following a review of the data collected, KDHE and EPA concurred with USACE's recommendation of no further action.
